Many homes and commercial properties use septic systems for their plumbing. With sizeable tanks and specialized filtration, septic plumbing systems are practical solutions for the safe management of a property’s waste and wastewater. How Does a Septic Tank Work? What Are the Different Components?

Septic tank systems work by capturing solid waste and wastewater from your plumbing system. It’s divided into solid and liquid components before the liquid (known as effluent) is forced out of the tank. Over time, the solid waste fills the tank, which has to be pumped out.

Removing waste from the tank is an essential service to keep a septic system a viable option. Without being periodically emptied, it could lead to backflow contamination and even premature system failures. Preventive septic tank pumping ensures that the tank is never overfilled, preventing costly repairs and prolonging the life span of the septic system.

Safety inspections are another key service. Our technicians will inspect the tank, drain field and other sections of your septic system to look for signs of trouble. Preventive inspections enable us to make any necessary repairs before they’ve caused extensive damage.

A Septic Tank Plumbing System Has Several Parts

Inlet and outlet pipes: The inlet pipes transport wastewater out of the main plumbing system and into the septic tank. The outlet piping, meanwhile, should send the effluent out of the tank and into the drain field.

Baffles: Partitions housed within the tank gradually separate solid waste from the liquid effluent. Without the baffles, solid waste products could end up flowing out of the tank with the liquid effluent.

Septic tank: A proper septic tank should be built out of concrete, fiberglass or plastic. They should be built to ensure solid waste settles at the bottom of the tank while the liquid effluent flows out and into the drain field.

Drain field: A septic system uses a drain field, with a system of perforated piping, allowing the liquid effluent to drain into the soil. The drain field should be buried underground a short distance away from the tank itself.

Soil: The surrounding soil is also part of a septic system by adding another layer of filtration to the liquid effluent as it exits the drain field piping. Bacteria in the soil break down pollutants within the effluent before it reaches the groundwater, protecting the local ecosystem from pollution.
