How Do I Switch from Oil to Natural Gas?

If you’re heating your home with oil, you probably know that it can be the most expensive way to heat a home, is dirty, and inconvenient – which is why more homes are choosing to convert to natural gas.

That is also one of the reasons why most new homes are built for different forms of heating, such as electricity, propane, or natural gas. This, however, is not the case with many historical and aging homes around Pennsylvania, which still rely on oil heat.

If you’re considering replacing your old oil heating equipment, you’ll be happy to know that the benefits of converting to natural gas are multiple. It’s more cost-effective and energy-efficient. The maintenance and cleaning process is much simpler (and cheaper). It’s more versatile and convenient and can enhance your overall lifestyle. It’s clean and better for the environment. And you’ll never have to worry about running out of gas, even on the coldest of Pennsylvania winter nights.

Plus, most of the Natural Gas consumed by UGI customers is produced in the U.S. In fact, the state of Pennsylvania is becoming one of the most productive gas resources in the county, and around the world. This abundance of natural gas so close to home means that prices stay relatively low and decrease our dependence on foreign fossil fuels. This domestic supply is projected to last for decades which means that we should see affordable natural gas prices well into the foreseeable future.

All these benefits will not only make your life easier, but natural gas conversion can also add value to your home. While the numbers differ by area, real estate agents generally agree that a home with natural gas will sell much quicker than houses with oil or other heating sources.

If you’re ready to make the switch, rest assured converting from oil to natural gas has never been easier.

What is Involved in Switching My Home from Oil to Natural Gas?

The highly experienced team of qualified and skilled conversion experts at UGI Heating, Cooling & Plumbing will walk you through the entire process, schedule and oversee your Natural Gas Conversion project.

Before your conversion, our Comfort Consultant will come to your home for a free, in-home estimate and evaluation. He or she will help you to decide if your existing equipment can be converted, or if you want or need new HVAC equipment – furnace, boiler, water heater, etc. Our expert will be able to help you to apply for financing, if desired, and help to determine which options would qualify for utility rebates and/or manufacturer rebates. (Yes, you can get rebates for converting to high-efficiency equipment!)

The actual conversion process will include contacting the natural gas utility company, handling all necessary permits, properly removing the old oil tank and installing or converting you home space heating and/or water heating equipment. Our team will work with the natural gas utility to coordinate hook up to the natural gas main, and to set up your new gas meter.

The gas company will determine how far your home or business is from a gas line and determine the availability of gas in your area. They will provide you with an estimate for bringing the gas line from the street to your home. This cost can vary greatly depending on how close your house is to an existing gas main.

During the project, expect that your property will experience some disruption; however, once the installation crew completes their work, they’ll leave your property clean and in order.

Depending on your budget and heating, cooling, and plumbing needs, our proficient team will help you choose the perfect system size and type.

Financing is available with approved credit and we offer a hassle-free financing option through Microf.
